This is another very nostalgic sandwich for me…it conjures cozy memories of snow falling outside and a nice hot bowl of tomato soup to dip the sandwich in. (Or maybe that’s a Campbell’s Soup commercial…) At any rate, my Sims definitely ate a lot of grilled cheese sandwiches.
If you didn’t already know, the secret to making a perfect grilled cheese sandwich is buttering both sides of the bread. Secret #2: If you’re adding tomato, you need to sprinkle the tomato slices with a pinch of salt.
Here’s how to make a classic vegan grilled cheese and tomato sandwich.

Basic Vegan Grilled Cheese and Tomato Sandwich
(Makes 1 sandwich)
Ingredients:
- 2 slices of bread
- 2 slices of vegan cheese
- thinly sliced heirloom or vine-ripened tomato
- 2 Tablespoons vegan butter
- salt to taste
Instructions:
- Heat a skillet over medium-low flame.
- Butter both sides of each slice of bread. (It’s a bit of a messy process, but it’s worth it.)
- Layer one slice of bread with cheese and tomato slices. Sprinkle the tomatoes with a pinch of salt. Then put the top slice on.
- Place the sandwich in your hot skillet. Cook until the bread is nicely toasted on one side.
- Flip the sandwich with a spatula and cover the pan with a lid. (If you don’t have a lid you can use a large plate.) Covering the pan will create a little steam, which helps the cheese melt.
- Remove from pan when the second side is toasted and the cheese is melty. Slice in half diagonally, and serve.
